Any tips on how to assemble a power generator pull string/spring?
I have a 1000W generator. Nothing is broken but the pull string didn't recoil when I pulled it. So I took out the screws and opened it up. I lifted off the spool and the spring popped out. Ok, so there are 4 main pieces, the string, the coil spring, the spool that connects to both the sting and the coil spring, and the base. I've tried a number of times to coil the spring tight to get it in the tray but its too difficult and I'm not even sure if this is the right thing to do. Too much tension possibly?
Anyone have any suggestions on how to reassemble this pull string contraption?
Those can be a major PITA to put back together. The spring is potentially dangerous, you should wear eye protection at all times you are working on it. There are a couple of metal tabs which hold the assembly together. Straighten them out to allow access to the spring and overall assembly. Start with the fixed end of the spring. It should fit inside a slot in the housing. Then gradually wind it around slowly until you can fasten the other end and close the housing. The spring will be very loose but it's ok for now. Remove the handle from the cord and pull the cord inside the housing. You will need to wind the spring tight with the cord removed from the hole in the housing. After it has been tightened several turns you need to push the cord back out through the hole and fasten the handle. Pull on the cord to confirm tension is ok, that the spring fully retracts the cord and that it doesn't overtighten while pulling the cord. Bend over the tabs and reconfirm. Now you can put it back on the engine.
